A high-quality footmuff is an essential winter accessory for your pushchair, keeping your child warm and snug even in freezing temperatures.
At Babyartikel.de, you’ll find a wide selection of footmuffs for strollers , pushchairs and infant car seats. Our expert team is happy to advise you on sizes, materials and the best way to care for your footmuff.
A cosy, warm footmuff is a must-have for pushchairs and buggies during the colder months, as babies lose heat quickly. The right footmuff provides reliable protection from cold, wind and damp conditions.
Which footmuff materials are available?
The most popular footmuff materials are sheepskin, thermal fabrics and down. Each material and type of filling has its own advantages and drawbacks.
Choosing the right material often comes down to personal preference. Do you prefer high-performance technical fabrics or natural materials? Is it important that the footmuff is rainproof or easy to wipe clean? And of course, your budget will also play a role in deciding which option is right for you.
1. Sheepskin footmuff
A winter footmuff made from sheepskin feels wonderfully soft and cosy, keeping your child reliably warm even in sub-zero temperatures. As a natural material, sheepskin is temperature-regulating – it keeps your child snug without causing overheating.
Ideally, choose a sheepskin footmuff made from medically tanned sheepskin, as this can usually be machine washed. It’s also worth looking for sheepskin sourced from local or European farms.
For example, manufacturer Kaiser states that its sheepskins come from sheep raised in Germany or elsewhere in Europe and not from intensive farming.
2. Thermal footmuff
A thermal footmuff is filled with insulating synthetic padding or fibre balls. The outer fabric is durable, hard-wearing and often wipe-clean.
These high-performance fillings provide reliable insulation against the cold while also wicking away moisture, so your baby stays warm without overheating. A soft fleece or teddy lining adds extra comfort and keeps your child cosy.
Thermal footmuffs are easy to machine wash, as the synthetic fibres are lightweight and resilient. Another practical benefit: like a quilted jacket, they can be rolled up compactly and stored in the pushchair basket when not in use.
3. Down footmuff
Soft down and feathers used as filling offer excellent temperature regulation and good air circulation. At the same time, a down footmuff keeps your baby warm without the risk of overheating.
In many pushchair footmuffs, down is combined with synthetic fibres. This makes the footmuff lighter and often more affordable, while still providing reliable warmth.
What size footmuff do I need?
Broadly speaking, there are two standard footmuff sizes:
Small footmuff for carrycots or infant car seats, suitable from birth to around 6–9 months.
Dimensions: approx. 75–85 cm long and 35–40 cm wide.
Large footmuff for buggies, pushchair seats or bike trailers, suitable from around 6 months up to 2–3 years.
Dimensions: approx. 90–100 cm long and 45–50 cm wide.
There are also adjustable footmuffs that can be extended at the foot end with a zip as your child grows. As a general rule, your baby should have enough room to move comfortably – but shouldn’t sink down inside the footmuff.
Washing and caring for your footmuff – the right way
With babies and toddlers, stains are almost unavoidable. It’s best to wipe away marks straight away using a damp cloth and, if needed, a little mild soapy water.
Most winter footmuffs are machine washable. Always check the manufacturer’s care label first – especially with sheepskin models.
Washing a sheepskin footmuff
Sheepskin has natural self-cleaning properties and usually just needs airing out. If washing is necessary, use a special sheepskin detergent or a mild wool detergent. Wash by hand (for example in the bathtub) or on a wool cycle in the washing machine at a maximum of 30°C with a low spin speed.
Leave the footmuff to dry flat, then brush it with a sheepskin brush to restore its soft, fluffy texture.
Washing a thermal footmuff
A polyester thermal footmuff can be washed at up to 40°C on a gentle cycle, ideally turned inside out. Do not use fabric softener. Dry it flat or on a washing line.
Washing a down footmuff
A down-filled footmuff can be machine washed at 30°C on a gentle cycle. To prevent the feathers from clumping, it’s best to tumble dry it with tennis balls or dryer balls. If you don’t have a tumble dryer, dry it flat on a rack and shake it regularly to redistribute the filling.
