Baby Carrier Buying Checklist

A good baby carrier should:

  • be suitable for your baby’s age and weight

  • support ergonomic carrying in the M-position

  • provide proper head and neck support

  • feature an adjustable seat width

  • distribute weight evenly

  • be easy to put on

  • have wide, padded shoulder straps

  • be made from soft, comfortable materials

Baby Carrier or Baby Wrap?

Choosing between a baby carrier and a baby wrap mainly depends on your everyday routine. A baby wrap is especially flexible and snug during the early months.

A baby carrier is usually quicker to put on than a baby wrap. Many parents find a baby carrier more practical, especially when out and about or when switching between carrier and stroller.

The perfect combination of a baby carrier and a baby wrap is a half-buckle carrier, featuring shoulder straps that can be tied individually for a flexible fit. This is especially beneficial for parents of different heights.

Baby Carrier from Birth: What Matters Most

For a newborn baby carrier, good head and neck support as well as an ergonomic fit are especially important.

If you want to use a baby carrier from birth, your baby should have reached the minimum weight required for the carrier. Depending on the model, this is usually 7 or 7.7 lbs.

For very small babies, a baby wrap can also be a great alternative.

Baby Carriers for Front, Back, or Hip Carrying

  • Front carrying is especially popular during the first few months because your baby stays close to you and remains in clear view.

  • A back carrier is a practical choice once your child gets bigger and heavier. Carrying your baby on your back makes everyday tasks like cooking or vacuuming much easier.

  • Baby carriers designed for hip carrying are ideal for short periods of carrying throughout the day, such as while shopping.

Versatile and Flexible

Most of our baby carriers support all three carrying positions, making everyday life easier in every stage of your baby’s development.

Comfortable Baby Carriers for Summer & Winter

A baby carrier for summer should be lightweight, breathable, and comfortable against the skin. Airy materials such as mesh fabric or linen are ideal.

If you want to use your baby carrier in winter, dress your baby in a cozy snowsuit under the carrier and keep them protected with a warm babywearing cover.

Your Questions About Baby Carriers & Baby Wraps — Answered

Many baby carriers are suitable from birth or from 3,2 to 3,5 kg (7 to 7.7 lbs). What matters most is that the carrier fits your newborn’s size and weight. It should provide good head and neck support and be adjustable to keep your baby in an ergonomic spread-squat position.

To support your baby’s back, they should sit deep in the baby carrier with their knees gently drawn up. The knees should be positioned slightly higher than the bottom, creating an “M” shape. The back should remain softly rounded in a natural “C” shape.

With a full-buckle carrier, both the waistband and shoulder straps are secured with buckles. With a half-buckle carrier, only the waistband is fastened with a buckle, while the shoulder straps are tied. This makes a half-buckle carrier more adjustable, while a full-buckle carrier is especially quick and easy to put on.

Baby carriers with wide, padded shoulder straps and a supportive, well-fitting waistband are generally considered especially back-friendly.

Many parents search for a “forward-facing baby carrier” or a “baby carrier facing out.” In most cases, however, it is better to carry your baby facing inward, as this provides better support and allows you to respond more quickly to your baby’s cues. If your child wants to see more of the world, hip carrying or later back carrying is often the better alternative. If you do want to carry your baby facing outward, make sure to use a suitable carrier and only do so for short periods in a low-stimulation environment.
