What footmuff materials are available?
The most popular footmuff materials are sheepskin, thermal material, or down. Each material and filling has its pros and cons.
Choosing the material is also always a matter of taste: Do you value high-tech textiles, or do you prefer natural products? Is it important to you that the footmuff is rain-resistant or wipeable? And of course, your budget also plays a role in which material you choose.
1. Sheepskin Footmuff
A winter footmuff made of sheepskin feels soft and fluffy and reliably keeps your baby warm even in sub-zero temperatures. Sheepskin is a natural product with a climate-regulating effect – meaning it keeps your child nice and warm without them sweating.
It's best to choose a sheepskin footmuff made of medically tanned sheepskin, since that can also be washed in the washing machine. Ideally, it should come from local sheep.

2. Thermal Footmuff

This kind of high-tech filling material insulates against cold while wicking away moisture at the same time, so your baby neither freezes nor sweats. A cozy lining made of fleece or teddy plush makes sure your child feels comfortable.
You can easily wash a thermal footmuff in the washing machine, since the synthetic fibers are lightweight and low-maintenance. Another advantage: similar to a quilted jacket, a thermal footmuff can be rolled up small and stowed away, for example, in the stroller basket.
3. Down Footmuff
Fluffy down and feathers used as filling in a footmuff have a climate-regulating effect and ensure good air circulation. At the same time, a down footmuff keeps your baby warm without the risk of overheating.
In stroller footmuffs, down is also often blended with synthetic filling material. This makes the down footmuff a bit lighter and more affordable.
What footmuff size do I need?
Broadly speaking, there are two common footmuff sizes:
Small footmuff for strollers (stroller bassinet) or infant car seats, suitable for babies from birth to about 6-9 months.
Dimensions: Approx. 75-85 cm long and approx. 35-40 cm wide.
Large footmuff for jogging strollers or stroller seat units or bike trailers, suitable for babies and toddlers from about 6 months to about 2-3 years.
Dimensions: Approx. 90-100 cm long and approx. 45-50 cm wide.
There are also footmuffs that grow with your child, which can be extended at the foot end with a zipper. As a general rule: your baby should have enough freedom of movement in the footmuff, but should not sink into it.
Washing and Caring for Your Footmuff: How to Do It Right
Stains are hard to avoid with babies and toddlers. It's best to wipe stains off right away with a damp cloth and, if needed, mild soapy water.
Most winter footmuffs are machine washable. Especially with sheepskin, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the care label.
Washing a sheepskin footmuff
Sheepskin has a self-cleaning effect and usually only needs to be aired out. If washing is ever necessary, it's best to use a special sheepskin detergent or a mild wool detergent. Wash the sheepskin footmuff by hand (for example, in the bathtub) or on the wool cycle in the washing machine at max. 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) and a low spin speed.
Let the sheepskin footmuff dry lying flat and then brush it with a fur brush so the lining becomes soft and fluffy again.
Washing a thermal footmuff
Wash a polyester thermal footmuff at max. 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) on the gentle cycle, ideally inside out. Do not use fabric softener! Dry the footmuff either lying flat or on a clothesline.
Washing a down footmuff
You can wash a footmuff with down filling at 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) in the washing machine (gentle cycle). To prevent the feathers from clumping, it's best to dry it in the dryer with tennis balls or dryer balls. If you don't have a dryer, dry it lying flat on a drying rack and fluff up the feathers from time to time.
