A high-quality footmuff is the most important stroller accessory in winter, because it keeps your child warm and cozy in the stroller even in freezing temperatures.

A cozy, warm footmuff is essential in the stroller or lightweight stroller during the cold season, since babies get cold very quickly. The perfect footmuff provides optimal protection against cold, wind, and moisture.

Checklist: The Perfect Footmuff for Strollers, Lightweight Strollers, or Infant Car Seats

A good footmuff should meet these criteria:

  • Protection from cold: The ideal footmuff has insulating filling, such as thermal fibers or down, and a cozy inner lining made of fleece, sheepskin, or wool.

Some footmuffs, especially the smaller models for the stroller bassinet, also have a hood that keeps your baby's sensitive head nice and warm.

  • Protection from the elements: When buying a footmuff, also make sure it has a weatherproof outer fabric that repels wind and moisture.

In heavy rain, you'll also need a rain cover.

  • Protection from overheating: In the supermarket, at a café, or in the car, your baby can quickly get too warm in the footmuff. That's why it's important that you can easily open and unfold the footmuff.

With many footmuffs, you can also remove the front section entirely. You can easily check your baby's temperature at the neck: if your baby is sweating, open the footmuff and possibly remove the jacket as well.

  • Safety: For secure attachment in the stroller or infant car seat, the footmuff needs harness slots.

Many footmuffs also have a non-slip underside for better grip in the stroller seat. Reflectors help make sure you're seen well in the dark.

  • The right size: A good fit is important so your child has enough room in the footmuff. The footmuff's size must also match the size of the stroller.

A footmuff for the stroller bassinet or infant car seat is generally somewhat smaller than a footmuff for the lightweight stroller, which you can use into toddlerhood.

  • Quality: Look for cleanly finished, sturdy seams with no loose threads hanging out.
The zippers on a footmuff shouldn't stick and should have a chin guard.

What footmuff materials are available?

The most popular footmuff materials are sheepskin, thermal material, or down. Each material and filling has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Choosing the material is always partly a matter of taste: Do you prefer high-tech textiles or more natural products? Is it important to you that the footmuff is rainproof or wipeable? And of course, your budget also plays a role in which material you choose.

1. Sheepskin Footmuff

A winter footmuff made of sheepskin feels soft and fluffy and reliably keeps your child warm even in below-freezing temperatures. Sheepskin is a natural product with a climate-regulating effect – meaning it keeps your child cozy and warm without making them sweat.

It's best to choose a sheepskin footmuff made of medically tanned sheepskin, since that can also be washed in the washing machine. It should ideally come from local sheep.

Sheepskin footmuff manufacturer Kaiser advertises, for example, that its sheepskins come from sheep in Germany or Europe that are not raised in factory farming.

2. Thermal Footmuff

A thermal footmuff is filled with insulating synthetic padding or fiber balls. The outer fabric is sturdy, hard-wearing, and often even wipeable.

This kind of high-tech filling material insulates against cold while also wicking away moisture, so your baby neither gets cold nor sweats. A cozy lining made of fleece or teddy plush makes your child feel comfortable.

You can easily wash a thermal footmuff in the washing machine, since the synthetic fibers are lightweight and low-maintenance. Another advantage: similar to a quilted jacket, a thermal footmuff can be rolled up small and stored, for example, in the stroller basket.

3. Down Footmuff

Fluffy down and feathers as filling in a footmuff have a climate-regulating effect and ensure good air circulation. At the same time, a down footmuff keeps your baby warm without the risk of overheating.

In footmuffs for strollers, down is also often mixed with synthetic filling material. This makes the down footmuff a bit lighter and more affordable.

What footmuff size do I need?

Broadly speaking, there are two common footmuff sizes:

  • Small footmuff for stroller (stroller bassinet) or infant car seat, suitable for babies from birth to about 6-9 months.
Dimensions: Approx. 75-85 cm long and approx. 35-40 cm wide.

  • Large footmuff for lightweight stroller or stroller seat unit, or bike trailers, suitable for babies and toddlers from about 6 months to about 2-3 years.
Dimensions: Approx. 90-100 cm long and approx. 45-50 cm wide.

There are also footmuffs that grow with your child, which can be extended at the foot end with a zipper. As a general rule: your baby should have enough room to move in the footmuff, but shouldn't be swallowed up by it.

How to wash and care for a footmuff correctly

With babies and toddlers, stains are hard to avoid. It's best to wipe stains off right away with a damp cloth and, if necessary, mild soapy water.

Most winter footmuffs are machine washable. Especially with sheepskin, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions, which you'll find on the care label.

Washing a sheepskin footmuff

Sheepskin has a self-cleaning effect and usually only needs to be aired out. If washing is necessary after all, it's best to use a special sheepskin detergent or a mild wool detergent. Wash the sheepskin footmuff by hand (e.g., in the bathtub) or on the wool cycle in the washing machine at a maximum of 86°F (30°C) and a low spin speed.

Let the sheepskin footmuff dry lying flat and then brush it with a fur brush so the lining becomes soft and fluffy again.

Washing a thermal footmuff

Wash a polyester thermal footmuff at a maximum of 104°F (40°C) on the gentle cycle, ideally inside out. Do not use any fabric softener! Dry the footmuff either lying flat or on a clothesline.

Washing a down footmuff

You can wash a footmuff with down filling at 86°F (30°C) in the washing machine (gentle cycle). To keep the feathers from clumping, it's best to dry it in the dryer with tennis balls or dryer balls. If you don't have a dryer, dry it lying flat on a drying rack and fluff up the feathers from time to time.

The Most Important Questions About Footmuffs

In the depths of winter, your baby should wear a warm snowsuit or a fleece-lined overall even in the footmuff. In fall temperatures, a warm jacket is usually enough. Always keep in mind: babies can't yet regulate their body temperature as well on their own. They also move very little in the stroller and get cold quickly.

Stroller bassinet footmuffs are typically about 75-85 cm long and therefore somewhat smaller than footmuffs for lightweight strollers. A footmuff for the stroller bassinet fits your baby from birth to about 9 months.

There are also summer footmuffs made of a lightweight material. On cool summer days, a thin summer footmuff can be a good idea so your baby doesn't get cold in the stroller.
