Do I really need a diaper bag, or is a regular handbag enough?

But you'll soon notice that during your baby's diaper years, they need quite a lot of things that will barely fit in a regular handbag. That's why diaper bags always offer enough storage space to safely stow away everything your little one needs on the go.

Another point in favor of getting a diaper bag is its clever design. There are hardly any handbags as functionally designed as diaper bags. They usually feature a practical interior layout with many differently sized compartments and pockets. That way, everything has its own place, and time-consuming rummaging becomes a thing of the past.

What types of diaper bags are there?

In principle, diaper bags come in just about every size and shape. Still, they can be divided into 4 basic types: diaper bags, twin bags, diaper backpacks, and diaper pouches.

Diaper bags

Diaper bags can be further divided into 2 different types. On one hand, there are messenger bags, and on the other, there are fashion-forward bags. Messenger bags usually have a rectangular shape and tend to come in understated colors. Thanks to their simple design, these bags often look very unisex and are therefore also great for men. Their compact shape makes them the perfect everyday companion, which is why the messenger bag has become the preferred style in recent years.

The opposite of that are the fashion-forward diaper bags, some of which even come from designer labels. With these models, there are no limits to shapes, colors, and patterns. These luxury bags sometimes also offer extras for moms, such as a compact mirror and a built-in lipstick pocket. That's why many moms continue to use these bags as a stylish handbag even after the diaper years are over.

What both types have in common: both messenger bags and fashion-forward styles have plenty of small inner and outer pockets in addition to large compartments. So they offer plenty of storage space to help you have everything you need on hand while out and about.

Diaper bags come as top-handle bags or shoulder bags. However, most top-handle bags are shipped with a separate shoulder strap, making both ways of carrying them possible. Twin bags

For parents of twins, or of 2 small children in diapers at the same time, there are so-called twin bags. These models are built like regular diaper bags, but their especially large size offers enough storage for double the amount of changing supplies. Diaper backpacks

In recent years, diaper backpacks have also become established on the market. Dads in particular tend to prefer them over a conventional diaper bag. As expected, the diaper backpack is worn on the back, distributing the weight evenly across both shoulders. That gives it the best weight distribution and restricts freedom of movement the least. Diaper backpacks are especially comfortable when you're carrying your baby in a baby wrap, or when the kids are already bigger and no longer need a stroller or lightweight stroller anymore.

Some models are even designed so they can easily be converted into a shoulder bag with an additional strap. Various brands also equip their backpacks with a separate stroller attachment, making it possible to mount them on the handlebar. Similar to diaper bags, backpacks also feature various compartments and pockets, so the most important items are safely stored. Due to their shape, however, items in backpacks inevitably end up stacked on top of each other. This means items stored at the very bottom aren't quite as easy to reach.

Diaper pouch

The most compact diaper bag format is the diaper pouch. It's significantly smaller and therefore only offers room for the bare essentials. The advantage is that on very short outings you don't have to lug around your entire setup in a large bag, while still being prepared for minor mishaps.

A diaper pouch can in no way replace a good diaper bag. Especially during the first year of life, its storage space is far too limited. Once your baby gets a bit older, you'll notice that you need fewer things when out and about, and you can then switch to a small diaper bag.

Which materials work well for diaper bags?

When it comes to the materials used for diaper bags, parents also have a wide selection to choose from. Manufacturers mostly rely on very sturdy materials that are dirt- and water-repellent, making the bag easier for parents to care for. Fabrics like leather, canvas, nylon, or cotton are popular materials for diaper bags. However, polyester has become the dominant choice in recent years. So what are the pros and cons of the different fabrics?

Polyester

Polyester has become the leading material for making diaper bags, since despite its light weight it's very sturdy and has a long lifespan. It's water- and dirt-repellent and can easily be cleaned with a damp cloth. So if you're looking for a low-maintenance bag, a polyester diaper bag is an excellent choice.

Cotton

Cotton is a natural fiber and is therefore largely free of harmful substances. While the material is especially tear-resistant and lightweight, it isn't waterproof. Cotton diaper bags are generally more prone to staining but can be cleaned in the washing machine.

Canvas

Canvas is a natural linen fabric with a tight, dense weave that is water-repellent. Despite its relatively light weight, the material is very durable. Light stains can easily be removed with a sponge. For heavier stains, the bag can also be washed in the washing machine, though there is a risk it may shrink slightly.

Leather

Especially high-quality bags today are increasingly made of leather. As a natural material, it's free of harmful substances and also especially sturdy. However, leather bags tend to be relatively heavy.

Faux leather

Faux leather is a synthetic material with high water resistance. It's tear-resistant and relatively lightweight. It can simply be wiped clean.

Nylon

Nylon is a synthetic fiber that is waterproof and quick-drying. It's tear-resistant, durable, and very lightweight. Nylon bags can be wiped clean and are often machine-washable as well.

Many diaper bags also combine several materials — for example, water-resistant nylon fabric with sturdy faux leather elements such as carrying handles and trim, along with a soft cotton lining on the inside. The idea behind such combinations is usually to make the interior moisture-resistant and easy to wipe clean, while the exterior is finished with materials that make the diaper bag especially attractive.

Important buying criteria

Before deciding on a diaper bag, you should take a close look at the available bags and compare them, since over the next few years, the bag will become your constant companion. There are a few features you should consider when making your decision.

Shape and size

Backpack or bag? If you're more of an outdoorsy type who likes to be out in nature, a backpack is probably the right choice for you. Even if the diaper bag is often meant to be carried by dad, a backpack is a great choice. If you decide on a bag instead, you should think about the size of the bag. There's no single ideal size for a diaper bag. The right size for you depends much more on how often and how long you'll be out and about with your baby, and what items you want to bring along.

Interior layout

The perfect diaper bag shouldn't just offer enough space, it should also have a practical interior layout. In addition to a large main compartment inside, you should also look for various smaller inner and outer pockets. How many compartments you need is, again, an individual decision. Many bags offer, in addition to compartments for diapers and the like, an antibacterial wet pocket. This is where used diapers or wet or dirty clothing and bibs can be stored hygienically. That way, you prevent moisture from getting into the rest of the bag. A built-in bottle holder also proves to be extremely practical. It keeps bottles from getting jumbled up with other baby items and potentially leaking. But these days, interior layouts aren't designed with baby items in mind alone. Many bags also include compartments for mom's phone or wallet, as well as a carabiner clip for keys.

Color and design

While in the past there were only a few options to choose from, often limited to a simple black bag or a model in baby blue or pink, today you have a huge selection of exciting patterns and bright colors to choose from. Of course, you should always go with your own taste when deciding. However, looks shouldn't be the deciding factor when choosing a diaper bag.

Carrying and attachment options

Think about how you want to carry your diaper bag. A bag with short handles looks stylish, but it doesn't leave your hands free, and a fully packed diaper bag can quickly get heavy. If you'd rather have a shoulder bag, look for bags with a long strap. Make sure the shoulder strap is adjustable in length. The strap should also be well padded so it doesn't dig into your shoulder. If you'd rather carry the bag on your back and want both hands free, a backpack is the ideal choice. Another important criterion you shouldn't overlook when choosing the perfect bag is the stroller attachment. Should the bag be attached using straps, hook-and-loop fasteners, hooks, or snap buttons, and is the attachment system compatible with your stroller?

Care and cleaning

As with most products bought for babies, a diaper bag should also be low-maintenance and, ideally, washable. After all, the diaper bag ends up being used on all sorts of surfaces while out and about, in public restrooms or at the playground. It should therefore definitely be wipeable or, ideally, machine-washable.

Accessories

Many diaper bags today come with matching accessories included. Most diaper bags nowadays have a built-in changing pad. This is either attached to the bag and can be unrolled as needed, or it's kept separately inside the bag. Another useful accessory is an insulated bottle bag. These keep pre-warmed bottles warm for a long period of time. That way, the bottle doesn't need to be reheated while you're out, and you can start feeding your baby right away. Removable utensil pouches are also very practical. These pouches have room for 1-2 diapers, wet wipes, and cream. If you're only heading out briefly and can do without the full kit, you can simply take the pouch out, put it in your handbag, and still be prepared for minor mishaps.

Which items you need in your diaper bag is ultimately your decision. It mainly depends on how long you'll be out and what your child needs during that time. Food and drink

Pacifier: If your baby uses a pacifier during the day, never leave the house without one.
