Buying a stroller: how to find the right one

Which stroller is right for me and my family? If you’re planning to buy a stroller, it’s important to answer these key questions first:

If you enjoy walks on forest trails, country paths or gravel park tracks, you’ll need a sturdy stroller with large wheels and good suspension.

Do you mostly spend time in the city, on paved streets, or in cafés and stores? Then slightly smaller wheels with swivel front wheels are a practical choice.

If you’re out and about by car every day, you’ll need a lightweight stroller with a simple folding mechanism.

If you drive a small car, also make sure the folded size is compact – it’s not enough if the stroller only just fits into the trunk.

If you plan to use your stroller for regular grocery shopping, choose a model with a large shopping basket that’s easy to access from all sides. A tight turning radius is also a real advantage in narrow supermarket aisles.

Parents with long legs need a stroller with a high-adjustable handlebar and plenty of legroom while pushing. And since tall parents often have tall babies, look for a spacious bassinet and a seat unit with generous dimensions.

Compact dimensions are especially practical if you need to store the stroller in a hallway or inside your apartment where space is limited.

If you have to leave the stroller frame in a stairwell, make sure to test during purchase whether you can remove the bassinet with one hand and carry it comfortably.

If you’re expecting a summer baby, choose a bassinet with a mesh window in both the carrycot and the canopy to ensure good airflow. The bassinet should also be as long and wide as possible. By the time winter arrives and your baby needs a thick footmuff, there should still be plenty of room.

For a winter baby, look for a bassinet that offers reliable protection from wind and cold weather. Ideally, the outer fabric should be slightly water-repellent.

Active parents have specific requirements when choosing a stroller. For jogging or inline skating, features such as a hand brake and wrist strap, a frame with three large, suspension-equipped wheels, and a five-point harness in the seat unit are essential.

The larger and thicker the wheels, the better the stroller performs on uneven surfaces such as gravel or rough paths.
Swivel front wheels are essential for a tight turning circle. On many models, the front wheels can be locked at the push of a button, which makes the stroller run more smoothly on forest trails and uneven ground.

Which handlebar type is best?

An adjustable handlebar with a hinge joint is practical for climbing stairs and offers plenty of legroom. It also allows your toddler to push the stroller themselves – something early walkers especially love.

Telescopic handlebars have the advantage that the height can be adjusted easily with one hand.

Hand brake or foot brake?

For everyday use, a foot brake is perfectly sufficient. It’s usually located in the centre of the rear axle or on one of the rear wheels.

If you live in a very hilly area or want to go jogging with your stroller, a hand brake is useful for controlling and reducing your speed.

Which tires are best for a stroller?

Air-filled tires with an inner tube, outer tire, and valve – similar to bicycle tires – provide excellent suspension and absorb bumps very well. You can adjust the pressure as needed: slightly softer for rough paths, firmer for paved roads.
Air chamber tires are maintenance-free – broken glass or sharp stones won’t damage them. They are made from foamed plastic with one continuous hollow chamber or several air chambers and offer good shock absorption.
EVA or airless tires are lighter and more affordable. However, they are best suited to smooth, paved surfaces because they provide less suspension. For this reason, EVA tires are typically used on lightweight buggies.

2. Comfort for babies and toddlers

To ensure your child feels comfortable in the stroller from birth through the toddler years, look out for these key features:
