Buying a stroller: how to find the right one

Which stroller is right for me and my family? If you’re planning to buy a stroller, it’s important to answer these key questions first:

If you enjoy walks on forest trails, country paths or gravel park tracks, you’ll need a sturdy stroller with large wheels and good suspension.

Do you mostly spend time in the city, on paved streets, or in cafés and stores? Then slightly smaller wheels with swivel front wheels are a practical choice.

If you’re out and about by car every day, you’ll need a lightweight stroller with a simple folding mechanism.

If you drive a small car, also make sure the folded size is compact – it’s not enough if the stroller only just fits into the trunk.

If you plan to use your stroller for regular grocery shopping, choose a model with a large shopping basket that’s easy to access from all sides. A tight turning radius is also a real advantage in narrow supermarket aisles.

Parents with long legs need a stroller with a high-adjustable handlebar and plenty of legroom while pushing. And since tall parents often have tall babies, look for a spacious bassinet and a seat unit with generous dimensions.

Compact dimensions are especially practical if you need to store the stroller in a hallway or inside your apartment where space is limited.

If you have to leave the stroller frame in a stairwell, make sure to test during purchase whether you can remove the bassinet with one hand and carry it comfortably.

If you’re expecting a summer baby, choose a bassinet with a mesh window in both the carrycot and the canopy to ensure good airflow. The bassinet should also be as long and wide as possible. By the time winter arrives and your baby needs a thick footmuff, there should still be plenty of room.

For a winter baby, look for a bassinet that offers reliable protection from wind and cold weather. Ideally, the outer fabric should be slightly water-repellent.

Active parents have specific requirements when choosing a stroller. For jogging or inline skating, features such as a hand brake and wrist strap, a frame with three large, suspension-equipped wheels, and a five-point harness in the seat unit are essential.

stroller buying checklist

What should I look for when buying a stroller? You can recognise a high-quality stroller by these five key criteria:

  1. Smooth handling

  2. Comfortable for your child

  3. Easy to use

  4. High-quality materials and reliable safety features

  5. Long service life

To find the right stroller, take a closer look at each of these points:

1. how to recognise good handling

  • A good stroller doesn’t wobble when you push it and can be steered easily with one hand.

  • The larger and thicker the wheels, the better the stroller performs on uneven surfaces such as gravel or rough paths.

  • Swivel front wheels are essential for a tight turning circle. On many models, the front wheels can be locked at the push of a button, which makes the stroller run more smoothly on forest trails and uneven ground.

Which handlebar type is best?

An adjustable handlebar with a hinge joint is practical for climbing stairs and offers plenty of legroom. It also allows your toddler to push the stroller themselves – something early walkers especially love.

Telescopic handlebars have the advantage that the height can be adjusted easily with one hand.

Hand brake or foot brake?

For everyday use, a foot brake is perfectly sufficient. It’s usually located in the centre of the rear axle or on one of the rear wheels.

If you live in a very hilly area or want to go jogging with your stroller, a hand brake is useful for controlling and reducing your speed.

Which tires are best for a stroller?

  • Air-filled tires with an inner tube, outer tire, and valve – similar to bicycle tires – provide excellent suspension and absorb bumps very well. You can adjust the pressure as needed: slightly softer for rough paths, firmer for paved roads.

  • Air chamber tires are maintenance-free – broken glass or sharp stones won’t damage them. They are made from foamed plastic with one continuous hollow chamber or several air chambers and offer good shock absorption.

  • EVA or airless tires are lighter and more affordable. However, they are best suited to smooth, paved surfaces because they provide less suspension. For this reason, EVA tires are typically used on lightweight buggies.

2. Comfort for babies and toddlers

To ensure your child feels comfortable in the stroller from birth through the toddler years, look out for these key features:

  • large bassinet
This is especially important for babies who are already a few months old in winter – there needs to be enough space for a thick footmuff.

  • high-quality mattress
Some models allow you to raise the head section of the mattress slightly, which can help if your baby spits up frequently or has reflux. Ventilation at the base of the bassinet is another great feature.

  • large sun canopy
Babies don’t like being dazzled by the sun, and their skin is very sensitive. The canopy on both the bassinet and the stroller seat should therefore be as large as possible.

  • ventilation through mesh windows
A mesh window in the bassinet canopy – and also in the stroller seat – ensures your baby always gets plenty of fresh air.

  • stroller seat with reversible direction, long backrest, and flat recline
Keep in mind that you’ll use the stroller seat much longer than the bassinet – usually for at least two to three years.

3. Easy handling: features that make the difference

A good stroller should also be as comfortable as possible for you. Handling should be simple, intuitive, and ergonomic.

Checklist for good stroller usability
  • intuitive folding mechanism

  • easy attachment and removal of the bassinet and seat unit

  • ergonomics (especially for tall parents): highly adjustable handlebar and a high bassinet position

  • padded, non-slip carry handle on the bassinet

  • sun canopy that can be opened with one hand

  • opening bumper bar

  • easy harness fastening, for example with a magnetic buckle

  • backrest adjustable with one hand

  • easily accessible shopping basket

4. Stroller quality and safety

When it comes to quality and durability, it often makes sense to choose a reputable stroller brand.

That said, a high-quality stroller doesn’t automatically have to be an expensive luxury model.

Key quality features to look for include:

  • A sturdy frame that won’t scratch easily, even after long-term use

  • High-quality suspension

  • Stable joints and connectors

  • A reliable braking system

  • Neatly finished seams, zippers and fasteners

  • Weather-resistant, dirt-repellent outer fabrics that can be cleaned or washed if needed

  • Spare parts that can be reordered

You can tell whether a stroller is safe for your child by checking the following points:
  • The stroller complies with the current safety standard EN 1888

  • It carries a TÜV or GS certification mark

  • The seat unit features a five-point harness that can be individually adjusted to your child

  • Additional protection is provided by a bumper bar

  • The wider the distance between the wheels, the more stable and tip-resistant the stroller

  • A folding lock prevents accidental collapse

  • Reflectors improve visibility and safety in low light conditions

5. Long-term usability

Children are getting taller and heavier (here), so when buying a stroller, look for generous dimensions – especially in the stroller seat. The backrest should be at least 50 cm long. For longer use, choose a frame that supports up to 22 kg or 25 kg.

Which stroller model is right for me?

1. Convertible strollers

The convertible stroller is the best-known and most popular type of stroller.

“Convertible” means a stroller that combines a stroller frame with both a bassinet and a matching stroller seat. It can be used from birth through the toddler years.

2. 3-in-1 travel systems

With our 3-in-1 travel systems, you get a compatible infant car seat and stroller adapters in addition to the convertible stroller. This means you’re fully equipped from the moment your baby is born.

3. Full-size strollers

A full-size stroller is designed for babies who can sit up independently – usually from around 6 to 9 months.

Unlike a classic lightweight buggy, a full-size stroller has a sturdier, larger frame and more robust wheels. Many models also allow you to buy a compatible bassinet separately so the stroller can be used from birth.

→ usable through the toddler years
→ sturdy and comfortable, but bulkier than a buggy

4. Lightweight strollers

Lightweight strollers are lighter, more maneuverable and more compact than traditional strollers – and are also suitable from the sitting age.

Once a child can sit independently, many parents choose to buy a compact lightweight stroller in addition to their larger convertible stroller. It folds down easily and takes up less space in the car.

5. Jogging strollers

A jogging stroller is a three-wheeled full-size stroller with excellent suspension – perfect for active families who enjoy spending time outdoors.

6. Double and twin strollers

Are you expecting twins – or do your children have a small age gap? Then you’ll need a double stroller or a sibling stroller.

With a twin or sibling stroller, you can choose between seats arranged side by side or one behind the other. In most models, the seating direction can also be adjusted. More and more strollers are also designed with seats positioned slightly offset above one another.

Be sure to check whether your preferred double stroller fits in your car trunk, the elevator in your building, and the designated stroller storage area.

→ available as a stroller from birth or as a buggy
→ check the dimensions carefully!

Frequently asked questions about buying a stroller

The “best” stroller depends on your individual needs – for example, whether you plan to use it mainly in the city, on rough terrain or while traveling. Key factors include comfort and suspension, weight and folded size, safety, and whether it can be used from birth (for example as a convertible stroller). When choosing a stroller, parents should focus on high-quality workmanship and features that fit their everyday lifestyle.

A high-quality stroller suitable from birth typically costs between €500 and €1,200. The price depends on the brand, features, material quality and weight capacity. There are also more affordable models available that perform well in independent tests.

Modern strollers can usually be used until early preschool age, around 3 to 4 years. The bassinet is typically used until about 7 to 9 months, after which you switch to the seat unit.

Ideally, you should buy your stroller during the second trimester of pregnancy. This gives you plenty of time for delivery, assembly and airing it out before your baby arrives.

A 3-in-1 stroller, also called 3 in 1 travel system, includes a frame, a bassinet, a seat unit and a matching infant car seat with adapters. This means you’re fully equipped from birth and can easily transfer the car seat from the car directly onto the stroller frame.
